Fox’s Sunday Night Lineup: Back With Somewhat of a Vengeance

Simpsonslarge New episodes! The Simpsons! American Dad! Family Guy! Oh, and they made me watch The War At Home also.

Last night was premiere night for Fox’s only decent night of comedy. It’s rare in these days of reality shows and cliffhanger Fox dramas. Let’s see how they did with the laughs....

The Simpsons set the Sunday-night bar high when Homer was forced to take over mob-boss duties while Fat Tony recovered from gunshot wounds. Homer’s shakedown of Moe was one of the best gags The Simpsons have done in a while. If last night was a sign of things to come this season, you should double-check your TiVo to make sure your Simpsons season pass has a high priority. And if you saw the episode, I have three words for you: truck truck truck.

Moving on… American Dad kept doing what they do best: bury hilarious lines in often-mediocre material. Last night they did their homage to those zany '80s summer-camp movies when Stan accidentally sent Steve to a refugee camp instead of a summer camp. The funny only took up about five minutes of the episode. You do the math on the not funny.

Then the Family Guy got us back on track. As we all know, the show can be hit-and-miss, but last night they started the season right with an episode about Peter’s prostate exam. Peter misinterprets his doctor’s attempt at a prostate exam as a lewd act. This is a subject only we males over 30 can truly appreciate, but it’s still fun for the whole family. There was also the usual abundance of silly non-sequiturs.

Finally… The War At Home. *Sigh* … Modern scholars are still trying to figure out why this show remains on the air. Last night’s steaming pile was about the kids going back to school and… I’ll be honest. I couldn’t even get through it. I watched about seven minutes and decided to bash my head with a two-by-four because it was less painful than watching one more second of this “comedy.” I think they’re adding and subtracting children and switching out actors just to see if anyone’s paying attention. Witness protection should place people on this show because there’s no better hiding place on the planet. I don’t think the cameramen are even watching.

All in all, Fox Sundays are a lot like last season. Your best bet is to sit down on your couch on Sunday nights at 8:00 and doze off sometime before 9:30. Happy viewing.
