Nip/Tuck: What's So Bad About Lobster Claws?

Title: “Conor McNamara”
First Aired: 10/24/06

By now, we’re all well aware that Nip/Tuck's pretty-boy plastic surgeon Sean has a baby son with lobster-claw hands.  This week’s episode centers around the surgery dilemma: To slice or not to slice?

Marlo, the intense and height-challenged nanny, has planted seeds of doubt in Julia’s mind, believing that young infants who undergo surgery face lifelong trauma as a result.  And that’s not all Marlo planted -- that was one hell of a passionate kiss he laid on Julia.  Can't she and Sean can’t keep their paws off the nannies?

As if that weren’t enough to deal with, Sean is plagued with wild flashbacks about his childhood years.  We learn for the first time in four seasons what truly motivated Sean to become a top plastic surgeon -- he underwent facial reconstruction himself.  As a baseball-lovin’ eight-year-old, Sean suffered from a facial deformity.  His mother used his college savings to pay for his surgery, against his father’s wishes.  Sean may have scored a handsome mug through the ordeal, but it caused his father to walk out on him and his mother.  When Sean reveals all this madness to Julia, they both feel cold feet setting in.

Meanwhile, Christian’s sweet side finally gets a chance to shine again.  One of his most loyal -- okay, obsessed -- patients comes in to ask for yet another round of work. This time, there’s a catch: she wants the surgery performed after she’s dead.  A victim of terminal cancer, she’s got little time left to live, and she insists on fitting into a size 2 on the day of her funeral.  Christian obliges, and his conscience shows some life as he ponders the wasted energies a body-loathing person exudes.  In the end, Christian discovers that his rich friend left every penny to his plastic surgery practice, as a gift to those who need work and can’t afford it.  You can bet this turn of events will come into play later in the season.

Back to Lobster-Claw Baby: Does the surgery commence?  Heck yes, it does, with sappy music to boot.  The little one's fingers are nip/tucked, and all appears successful.  What should really worry us isn’t the surgery itself, but the return of Marlo, and those smoldering gazes shooting between between him and Julia.  Does everyone on this show cheat on his or her significant other?  Don’t answer that; I’m waiting for next week’s episode to find out.

Nice write-up! I dont think anyone should be surprised that the Julia and Marlo relationship started to get hot and heavy. I knew it was coming the moment Marlo entered the room for the consult. It was as if he was the husband which had to piss Sean right off! I couldnt believe Marlo made his return so soon... in the waiting room no less!! I thought they were going to go at it right then and there while the surgery was underway! Julia is slime... She sleeps with every guy she's ever encountered in the show. You also have to appreciate the irony in her asking why Sean kept his secret (cleft palate) so long from her. This is the same person who lied to Sean for 18+ years of marriage making Sean believe Matt was his!

Next week looks fanastic with the guest appearance of Alanis Morissette to play Liz's new lesbian girlfriend! We'll also see the continuation of the Marlo/Julia relationship... and where's Matt and Kimber?!

-Nip/Tuck Fanatic!
