TV with MeeVee: Totally Frakked: Sci Fi Channel Picks Up Doctor Who Season Three

All the Whos down in Whoville are throwing a party. The Sci Fi Channel has signed a deal with the BBC to run the third season of Doctor Who. The series will debut on Sci Fi in July 2007, starting off with the Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Runaway Bride.

David Tennant is back again as the Tenth Doctor, and we poor Yankees will get to meet the Doctor's new companion, Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), in the season opener, "Smith and Jones."

Everybody over at the Sci Fi channel is pleased as punch over their new acquisition, and so are we.

Chris Regina, Vice President of Programming, Sci Fi Channel, said, "Doctor Who has become a favorite among Sci Fi audiences. We are happy to bring the show back for its third season, and look forward to following the Doctor's continuing adventures with his newest companion."

Executive Producer and Lead Writer Russell T. Davies says, "We were delighted and honored by the second series' success, and we can promise new thrills, new laughs and some terrifying new aliens. The Doctor and Martha are destined to meet William Shakespeare, blood-sucking alien Plasmavores, the Judoon -- a clan of galactic stormtroopers -- and a sinister Dalek plot in 1930s New York.'"

It's a match made in heaven all around. The Doctor has done well on Sci Fi, and Sci Fi has benefited from Doctor Who's name cred. It is the longest running sci-fi show in history, after all.

Candace Carlisle, COO, BBC Sales Company, commented, "Sci Fi Channel has been a fantastic platform for the Doctor Who series in the US. We're excited for the Season Three launch, and think American audiences will simply love the Doctor's hip new companion."

There will be plenty of joint marketing between BBC and Sci Fi for the new season. We can only hope that leads to 1930s Dalek action figures.

Reviews coming from those lucky enough to already be watching Season Three as it airs in the UK have been overwhelmingly positive. We here at Totally Frakked can't wait to get our grubby little mitts on the new season and tell you all what we think.
