Wealthy Geeks Salivate at Opportunity to Buy Knight Rider's KITT
It’s been 25 years since David Hasselhoff took the world by storm in the campy TV hit Knight Rider. Now the high-tech, talking car from that show can be yours -- for only $149,995. A Dublin, California auto dealer has announced the sale of the black 1982 Pontiac Trans Am, which is one of four “camera cars” that were used for close-ups while The Hoff was driving. Sadly, the car does not talk like it did on the show, which is ironic now that GPS technology has made talking cars commonplace.
KITT (short for “Knight Industries Two Thousand”) was a true scene-stealer in Knight Rider, as any sarcastic talking car is bound to be. The James Bond-esque spy car features the patented glowing red scanner light above the front headlights, two video screens on the dashboard, and such useful cockpit controls as ski mode, rocket boost, oil slick, and eject. The buttons are merely cosmetic, of course, but they’re still pretty damn cool.
Now, before you run out and spend that extra hundred and fifty grand that’s been burning a hole in your pocket, you should know that you will not be cruising around town in this car picking up geeky chicks. Alas, KITT is not considered street legal. It is considered a collector’s car, and will most likely be more of a conversation piece than anything else for whoever shells out the dough. It also won’t call you “Michael” or dole out any zingy one-liners, but for the true '80s geek that matters very little.
