The bloggers at TV Squad have a good chuckle with the "news" that the former "Frasier" co-star David Hyde Pierce is a gay man. Of course five minutes after Niles hit the stage, we all knew, right?

I like the way this news was released: they just mentioned his partner in some other announcement. It sort of implies he's been openly gay for quite some time, and we only now officially took notice. That's probably how things ought to go.
When we have gossip about not whether he's sleeping with men, but about WHICH men he's seeing, then we'll know our society doesn't make a big deal about this. That doesn't mean that gossip is a good thing, but it's a good sign when gossip treats gays and straights the same way.
Until then, we'll have to settle for "well, duh" as a response to stories like this.
