BSG Scorecard: The Hybrid Speaks
Wow. After a slightly lackluster episode last week, "BSG" has bounced back in a serious way. This episode was quite the emotional rollercoaster, I'll admit it even had me a little teary-eyed at a couple of points. Speaking of which, can we get Mary McDonnell an Emmy please? Despite the fact that Roslin's cancer treatments are undeniably the B-plot in this episode, she brings a pathos to the process that's absolutely irresistable. The whole "dying of cancer" schtick is such a painfully tired cliché that it's a tightrope walk to keep it from tipping into melodrama or parody, but somehow, she manages.
I have to award points to my husband, who successfully identified Emily as a Star Trek cameo; the improbably named Nana Visitor of "Deep Space Nine." I thought the plot with Emily was, truthfully, a little heavy-handed, and it was pretty obvious where it was going from the start. Nonetheless, it'll be interesting to see if Roslin ends up a convert to Gaius' ego-fueled pseudo-Christianity. Wouldn't that blow his tiny mind.
While all that was going on, the really big deal was over on the Demetrius. Let's see how Starbuck and crew scored.
Dead Cylons: 2 (And no resurrection ship! Goodbye... that particular model of 6 and that particular model of 8. We hardly knew ye.)- Dead Humans: 1 (Goodbye... sort of grumpy chick whose name we have already forgotten. We really hardly knew ye.)
- Prophecy Bingo:1 (That was some good dirt the hybrid was dishing. Lemme see if I've got all this, the 3 will lead the way to the Oceanic 6, who will find out who shot Nathan Petrelli?)
- Mickey Mutineers: 1 (Okay, actually there were a bunch, but I'll just count Helo for now. Honorable mention to Gaeda for getting a cap busted in his, er, knee.)
- Anders Nearly Gets His Fool Self Killed: 2 (We're going to need to start tracking this on an ongoing basis, I have a feeling the total will reach astronomical proportions.)
Does it bother anyone else that Starbuck is able to deal with Leoben so calmly after he imprisoned her and tried to turn her into his own personal Stepford Wife? Because it gives me the absolute willies every time I think about it. Also on the "giving me the willies" list, Natalie plugging 6 with Anders gun. That's the kind of thing that's going to make you need therapy, am I right?
For all of those of you who want to obsess over the prophecy, here's my best transcription: "A dying leader will know the truth of the opera house. The missing three will give you the five, who have come from the home of the thirteenth. You are the harbinger of death, Kara Thrace. You will lead them all to their end. End of line." I can only assume this means we'll be getting the threes back soon, which makes me happy. I like the particular brand of sinister and bitchy she brings to the table. Next week, it looks like we get to see what the heck is going on with Hera, which is nice because I was really starting to wonder. Hopefully there will also be another installment of Gaius Christ Superstar, because I just can't get enough of that.
